Osberton International Horse Trials
Saturday was cross-country day for the CCI1* and CCI2* sections at Osberton. I found this event hard work photography-wise last year. In hindsight, that was mostly due to inexperience, but gloomy conditions in the afternoon and an anti-clockwise direction to the course didn't help... So, I was pleasantly surprised to see a clockwise direction on the course this year. And, although it was cloudy at either end of the day, there was plenty of sunshine in between.
As ever, most of the spectators were congregated around the water, but some of the most dramatic action happened some distance away, at fence 6 in the CCI2* competition. The table with a slope on the landing side clearly unnerved a few riders, and caught a few out. Remarkably, both Eliza Stoddart and How Bazaar, and Flora Harris and Moylaw Badger (see gallery) managed to stay upright despite clipping the fence. Although Flora Harris and Moylaw Badger retired shortly afterwards, Eliza Stoddart and How Bazaar went on to record a clear round, albeit with a few time penalties.
With last year in mind, I stayed longer than I might have done once the drizzle set in later on, to see what I could get out of the camera in less than ideal conditions. Some of them came out ok, for example this shot of Andrew James and Jazz Concerto.
